Best Restaurant of the Year

All restaurants are looking out to win this award of culinary excellence. Winning this award means: you’re providing an outstanding service, the quality of the food is so good that you are coming back to eat their favorite dish again, as a customer you feel welcomed. Most likely the menu has some authentic dishes. And if the food is too much, the restaurants packs the food nicely as a takeaway dish. Overall best restaurant of Kampala! When ranking the best restaurants, please keep the following in mind:

  1. Service
    • Welcoming feeling by staff?
    • Are the waiters busy? Are they solicitous? Do you see them working together as a team, as a well-oiled machine, or are they idling around almost grudgingly getting up from a chair to attend you? Are they courteous and friendly? Are they dressed neatly even if not wearing a uniform or are they a bit unkempt?
    • No confusions about the order and when the bill arrives?
    • You don’t have to wait long for a waiter to attend your table, your drinks are there in a few minutes and the food doesn’t take that long (not longer than 30min!) to be served, unless explained differently.
  2. Atmosphere
    • Do you have a comfortable feeling when you’re at the restaurant?
    • Music not too loud or inappropriate
    • How does the overall place look like? Clean and neat but not sterile? Look for a welcoming atmosphere, tables should be set with charm, even if extremely simple. Even the most basic wooden table with no tablecloth can be clean and appealing. Are the condiments fresh or do they look like museum pieces?
    • Who eats here? (students, locals, expatriates, mixture of named groups)
    • Is the place always full?
    • Observe the people eating: do they look like they are enjoying their food? Are they properly waited on? Do they look like they’re enjoying the experience or do they look unhappy and are playing with their food?
    • How does the place smell? Do you smell heavenly aromas drifting from the kitchen? That’s usually a really good sign
  3. Quality of the food
    • Is the food well-presented and hot when it arrives at your table?
    • Does the menu have photos? If not try to peek at other people’s plates. Does the food look fresh?
    • Is the quality of the food high? A dish to order again?
  4. Menu & Value for price
    • Variety of the menu.
    • Authentic local restaurant?
    • Is the food reasonably prices or overpriced?

Best Customer Service

Uganda is a great beer nation and with a selection of local and international brands the beer culture is continuously evolving. Beer is a crucial component of the dining and food culture in Uganda, it is about time we recognize some of these brands.
